How To Make Snapping Photos?

Each photographer has his little tips to give a little pep to his photos. I propose today to see two small tips to add slamming to your images ...

These 2 techniques are quick to perform and will allow you to easily reach interesting results ... It will also be an opportunity to discover new uses for layers merge modes.

The photo used to illustrate this example was made by day of good weather but with a clogged horizon. The result is a rather sad image and without relief. So we will at first, improve its clarity and then look at the presence of rocks and ruins in the photo.

The filter passes high

Lightroom or Camera Raw users generally appreciate the clarity slider. This improves the local contrast on an image. So we have, in fine, a picture that seems sharper. The advantage is that with this function, you do not skip the image as is the case with the classic sharpening tool. This function does not exist in Photoshop Elements, so let's see how to create a similar effect ...

Open the photo to retouch and then duplicate the layer (Layer / Duplicate layer ...)

Select the top layer (1) and apply the High Pass filter (Filter / Miscellaneous). In the dialog box that appears (2), choose a value that is not too high (around 4) and validate.layers

PSE high pass filter

Stay on this layer and switch the blending mode to Soft Light (3). If you want a bigger effect, you can also choose the overlay merge mode. To decrease the intensity, lower the opacity of the layer (4).subdued light fusion mode

And that's all! Your photo is now more contrasted and sharper!

The degraded tool

Now that you have improved the clarity of your image, we will now boost your photo by working on its brightness.

Add a layer adjustment layer (Layer / New Adjustment Layer) and change the values of the shadows (left) to darken your photo (1), the values of the highlights (right) to lighten (2) and/or center to change the mid-tones (3).Level adjustment layer in PSE

Create a new layer (Layer / New ... / Layer) and position it under the layer of the layer you just created. Call the "gradient".

Select white in foreground color and black in the background, take the gradient tool, and choose the Foreground -> Background (4) gradient. Two choices are available to you:

Degraded tools in PSE

You are working on a landscape photo: choose the reflected gradient option (5). Start from the center of the photo and, while pressing the Shift key, click-drag down or left of your photo depending on whether you want a horizontal or vertical gradient. You should normally have white in the center and black on the sides or top and bottom if you have opted for a horizontal gradient.

You are working on a portrait photo: in this case, do the same manipulation but choose the radial-gradient (6) instead of the reflected gradient.

Stay on the "gradient" layer and change its merge mode by an overlay (7).

Inlay merge mode

Lower the opacity of this layer (about 20%) to obtain a convincing result (8).

As you can see, the subject of your photo is no longer present. The image has gained momentum. To convince yourself of this, show-hide the "gradient" layers and levels.

These two small techniques can be used in any type of photo. Be sure to use these effects in moderation. Remember that too much effect kills the effect.
